This Saturday, groups across the network will be rallying for reproductive rights. Check out the list below for information on what’s happening in your area. Mobilizing for reproductive rights is not new to the ROP network. In 2018, Ballot Measure 106 tried to amend the Oregon constitution to prevented public employees and working-class people, including those on Oregon Health Plan, from accessing abortion and related reproductive services. Rural Oregonians talked to their neighbors, shared the STAND election guide far and wide and this measure was overwhelmingly defeated!
Earlier this month we wrote about the Right’s relentless whittling away of Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court declining a stay to Texas’ SB8 which allows anyone to sue anyone involved in providing abortion care more than 6 weeks after conception. Oregonians were not alone in our outrage and the Women’s March issued a national call to mobilize and defend on Saturday, October 2nd, to send a clear message to the Supreme Court and lawmakers around the country that these attacks on reproductive rights will not be tolerated.
Oregon itself does not have any major legal restriction on abortion but access to these services remains a serious barrier. 78% of Oregon counties have NO abortion providers! Not to mention, many people can’t access abortion care due to lack of insurance coverage, lack of transportation, work, or caregiving obligations. Do you live in a county with no abortion providers? Does organizing around reproductive justice inspire you to take action in your community? Reach out to your local ROP organizer or monicap@rop.org, we would love to brainstorm with you!
Planning an action in your community? Here are some tips from the ROP network:
1. Make a Safety Plan: Counter-protesters are always a possibility when we organize in public. Use this event safety planning questionnaire, watch this training on de-escalation for organizers, and reach out to your local ROP organizer or monicap@rop.org if you want to talk through your plan.
2. Bring a sign-in sheet! This is a great opportunity to meet potential new group members! Designate someone from your group to be part of the “welcome wagon” and greet everyone who comes with a warm welcome and an invitation to sign up! That way you can keep in touch with people you meet after the event.
3. Tell us how it went! Reach out to your local ROP organizer or monicap@rop.org with an update on how it went! Send us photos, videos, or success stories so we can share them with the network. Don’t see your event listed below? Let us know what you’re planning and we can share it out over social media!
