Save the date: Rural Caucus on May 19 in The Dalles!

January 29th, 2018

Dear ROPnet,

Mark your calendars! This year’s Rural Caucus & Strategy Session will be on Saturday, May 19th in The Dalles! We are planning a whole weekend of direct action, strategic conversations, and people’s movement assemblies kicking off Friday, May 18th and continuing through Sunday, May 20th. Join us for the main event on Saturday or join us for the whole weekend!

For over 25 years, small town and rural organizers, activists, and community leaders from across the state have come together annually to reflect on the last year and to strategize about local and statewide organizing for the year to come at the Rural Caucus & Strategy Session! We are thrilled to be hosted in The Dalles this year, where local leaders have organized record-breaking Womxn’s Marches and supported two successful hunger strikes led by immigrants being illegally held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in despicable conditions within the local public jail.

More details and registration coming soon!

So much has happened since our last Caucus:

  • Measure 101 passed, protecting health care for kids, seniors, people with disabilities, and working families across Oregonians

  • Rapid Response strategies have been developed across the state to counter the vicious attacks on undocumented Oregonians and the first rural Oregon People’s Movement Assembly brought thinkers together to deepen the connections between communities

  • Violence in Charlottesville sparked actions and vigils across the state, and a recommitment to counter white supremacy in all of its forms

  • Resistance to Trump rescinding DACA has lit up the nation with protests pushing Congress into a February 8th deadline for a long-term solution

  • Post-Inauguration marches came back for a second year, with many marches assembling even more people than this time last year!

  • Rural Oregon, we have a lot to digest, discuss, and strategize about, and we need your county and your group in the room to do it! Talk to your friends, family, and human dignity group members. Decide on the team of 4-6 people who will represent your group and your community.

Can we count on seeing you there? Email us at jessica@rop.org and let us know!

    Warmly,
Jess, Emma, Hannah, and the ROP Team
