The role of community spaces and regional infrastructure in fighting authoritarianism

It’s becoming ever more important that, as leaders for human dignity and justice, we have physical space to gather. We may need these spaces for community gatherings like Latino Fest, to come together in the wake of disaster, to coordinate mutual aid and community care, or to host group meetings. ROP is invested in this type of infrastructure, not only through the Immigrant Help Center in Hood River, but also through the Community Building Center (CBC) in South Lane County. These Community Centers are a part of a broader strategy to create a statewide network of physical gathering spaces that grow our movement and meet the needs of rural communities and Human Dignity Groups.
Does your community have spaces that meet these needs?
Or, do you think there are gaps, but you have ideas of spaces (or community members that could provide them) that could be used for gatherings and to resource rural communities? Reach out to your ROP staff organizer to start the conversation today! Don’t know who your staff organizer is? Reply to this ROPnet or email office@rop.org and we will get you connected!
Looking for other ways to support ROP’s Community Centers and gathering spaces across rural Oregon?
- Donate dollars! ROP lives our values by keeping our community spaces free of charge. But with that added capacity, ROP keeps growing, and we need your support!
- Become a monthly sustainer! An easy way to make a big impact over time is to donate monthly to help ROP sustain on for the future.
- Leave your legacy! Include ROP in your planned giving through non-cash and cash gifts. Please reach out to Sam Corti at sam@rop.org to plan how you can leave a lasting impact on advancing justice across rural Oregon!
- Ask your organization, company, or foundation to sponsor Latino Fest, ROP, and our Community Centers! Can you donate a portion of your company’s profits for a day? Does your foundation have a fund for convening movement strategy spaces or community-building events? Have another idea? Email sam@rop.org to discuss this further!
Authoritarianism harms everyone in our communities, which means the current moment presents an opportunity for solidarity. The vast majority of us want to see an end to billionaires consolidating their wealth and power at the cost of thriving communities, which means we share a whole lot in common. Now we need to find each other, identify that alignment, and build community. Community events and spaces that center joy and justice are a powerful way to accomplish that and bring more people into this movement for a more just, inclusive, and economically fair democracy. Want to talk about this strategy and more? Want to plan a visit to the Immigrant Help Center in Hood River and the Community Building Center in Cottage Grove?
