KTA: Oregon is home, not a military target

WHAT IS THIS ACTIVITY?

Join thousands of Oregonians from every part of the state who are jumping into action to tell the Trump Administration: NO TROOPS IN OREGON. There are multiple ways to plug in this month, so keep reading! (P.S. We’re also thinking about how to use this federal abuse of power as a way to mobilize people and bring them into our groups to build the mass movement we need…)

WHY THIS ACTIVITY?

Over the weekend, Trump declared that he would be sending the National Guard to Oregon with the ability to use “full force”. The military takeover is unwanted, unlawful, and a threat to communities across Oregon. This abuse of power violates our right to govern ourselves and misuses taxpayer dollars that should be spent on other things we desperately need, like food, healthcare, and housing we can afford. We are coming together peacefully and speaking out to make clear that Oregon is our home, not a military target. Everyone should have the freedom to speak their mind without fear that the military will be turned against us.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE ACTIVITY

  1. (Back by Popular Demand!) Sign your group up for our next Meeting the Moment with Hardy Merriman on October 16th
Last week, we had the privilege of hearing from Hardy Merriman, a researcher, writer, and presenter who is one of the key voices nationally helping us better understand authoritarianism and what global movements have done to take down an authoritarian regime. We are excited to share that Hardy is coming back to meet with the ROP network again to get this important information to as many people as possible. If you or others in your group missed it the first time or just want to hear it again, sign up here and share this invitation widely! **This is a repeat of the previous Meeting the Moment Zoom with Hardy for folks who couldn’t make the last one. We will also share some updates on ways to get involved**
  2. Build your group’s action plan with ROP: 6 Ways to Organize against Authoritarianism
We’ve been talking and organizing with leaders across the ROP network and across the nation to understand the role of the ROP network right now. Here are some of the questions we’ve been asking to build a plan for shared action across the ROP network:
    • Hardy Merriman shared with us that the research says that for a mass movement big enough to topple authoritarianism, we need 3.5% of the population to participate. How do we bring in 3.5% of Oregon county by county in our rural communities and create the kind of joyful movement that keeps people engaged?
    • What does it look like to train and skill enough people up to be prepared to refuse to comply with the orders that come from the Trump Administration to undermine their power?
    • How can we deepen our commitments to work together across differences of opinion–building each other up instead of tearing each other down? We don’t have to all agree about the path forward and we can’t afford to be divided.
    • As we build this mass movement, how do we keep our eyes fixed on the far horizon–not going backward but using this power we are building to achieve justice and liberation for all people?
    • Check out the Rural Organizing Project Action Plan and then email us at emma@rop.org to let us know how you want to plug in and how we can support!
  3. Sign up for Protect Oregon
    • The ROP network is proud to be part of Protect Oregon, a coalition standing united against this abuse of power that endangers our families, our freedoms, and our futures.
    • Sign up for the newsletter for updates
    • Take and adapt the messaging guide for your group’s newsletter and social media

Kitchen Table Activism (KTA) is a monthly activity by the Rural Organizing Project. The idea is that small actions can lead to powerful collective results when groups of people gather to complete the same action across the state of Oregon. ROP works to keep each KTA easily achievable so that groups with other projects or groups with limited immediate energy can still complete the KTA each month.
