Statewide Transportation Tour: Coming to a town near you!

Dear ROPnet,

Public transportation is a key part of a well-functioning and interconnected community! Yet so many of our towns don’t have what we need for people to get from place to place in a timely, affordable, and safe way (for people and the planet!). Oregon legislators are developing a transportation package for the 2025 legislative session to address some of Oregon’s long term needs, from creating more sustainable public transportation to maintaining our current roads and infrastructure. From today through the end of September they are touring the state to engage community members and gather input on our transportation needs. This tour is an opportunity for us to speak up about what rural communities want in a moment of funding challenges and competing priorities!

What’s the Joint Committee Transportation Tour?

The Joint Committee on Transportation is a bipartisan committee of Senators and Representatives at the Oregon Legislature that hears transportation-related bills. They are holding 12 meetings and local tours around the state between now and September. Each meeting will include reports from ODOT on perceived needs and proposed policy solutions, followed by 90 minutes of public testimony. That’s where you come in! The feedback we provide will be used to inform the 2025 transportation package. Read on for more details on how to get involved and the upcoming tour schedule!

The committee’s goals in convening these meetings are:

  1. Build public understanding of transportation funding challenges and potential funding tools to address those challenges
  2. Build legislative understanding of statewide transportation needs and shared priorities
  3. Build local, regional, statewide support and a sense of urgency for a transportation funding package focused on maintenance, operations, and safety
  4. Gather input from the public and community leaders about preferred methods for addressing the transportation funding challenge.

Ways to Engage:

Along with the public forum, each stop on the tour will also include a conversation with community leaders, local elected officials, and legislators. The co-chairs of the Legislative Committee reached out asking ROP for community leaders to join in these roundtable discussions with the committee. Is the tour coming to your town? A coalition of transportation, climate, and environmental justice organizations from across the state are collaborating on a campaign called “Move Oregon Forward.” Their goal is to pass forward-thinking transportation legislation in 2025 and beyond that helps to benefit every Oregonian! The campaign kickoff will be Wednesday, June 26th from 12-1 PM on Zoom. Individuals and groups interested in the campaign can fill out this interest form. After filling out the interest form, you will get an invitation to the campaign kickoff and other upcoming campaign events! The campaign can also offer training and support for people preparing to speak at one of the transportation tour stops! You can check out more details on the campaign’s 2025 legislative priorities here.
