Dear ROPnet,

As we face an onslaught of attacks on the fundamentals of democracy, communities across the nation are organizing in response. Trump has proposed to merge the Departments of Education and Labor, an announcement that arrived shortly before the Supreme Court set labor unions back to the 1920s among a laundry list of other conservative rulings. In the midst of these attacks on student and worker rights, here in Oregon we have seen several local victories in the fight to end inhumane systems of detention and deportation.

Monday brought an end to the ICE contract in Springfield, Wednesday morning Josephine County’s Sheriff officially announced the end of Josephine County jail’s ICE contract, and the administrator of NORCOR who expanded the 4-county jail’s contract with ICE just submitted his letter of resignation. Beyond Oregon, NYC’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat out the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House with her platform that includes abolishing ICE; Cory McCray, a young African-American from Maryland– and proud IBEW electrician — defeated a 27-year incumbent state senator; and a Seattle-based judge ruled that Maru Mora Villalpando, targeted by ICE for her immigrant-rights activism, will likely be able to adjust her immigration status and remain in the US.

In response to Trump’s failure to reunite separated families, and his imprisonment and separation of more families everyday, rural Oregonians are taking action. See below for a round up of all of the events that are coming up this week and beyond. We are acting alongside Mijente’s Free Our Future Action in San Diego on July 2nd, the National Domestic Workers Alliance (organizing the #FamiliesBelongTogether Day of Action this Saturday) and many other groups including Cosecha and United We Dream in contesting the unjust systems of detention and deportation and to abolish ICE!

Events have already been happening: last Saturday, Lincoln County community members rallied to at Newport City Hall, and yesterday in Grants Pass, Josephine Social Justice Alliance brought over 100 people together for a rally at their County Courthouse. JSJA recently won a huge victory by advocating for their Sheriff to end their county jail’s contract with ICE! Across the country, undocumented folks and their allies are demonstrating their outrage by blockading a port of entry in Tornillo, TX, rallying at the national headquarters of ICE and shutting down ICE offices in Portland and many other cities.

Join us for Oregon’s Rural Week of Action! Find information below about actions near you, or organize your own! Don’t forget to send us photos/videos of the events! Are we missing your community? Please email cara@rop.org with event information, and we’ll update the list!

Warmly,
Emma, Hannah, Caroline, Cara and the ROP Team
