About ROP
The Rural Organizing Project is a statewide organization dedicated to building and supporting a rural-centered, multi-issue, grassroots base across Oregon. We advance a shared standard of human dignity: the belief in the equal worth of all communities, the necessity of equal access to justice, and the right to community self-determination.
Founded in 1992 in response to the Oregon Citizens Alliance’s discriminatory Abnormal Behaviors Initiative, ROP has grown from 30 human dignity groups to a network of over 80 across 35 counties and one tribal community. Our organizing is rooted in the leadership of local volunteers, supported by a small staff and a deep bench of fellows, interns, and allies.
ROP’s work is guided by three core principles:
- Every community matters
- Every issue is interconnected
- Transformational organizing builds power and resilience
We organize across the state through initiatives like the Rural Organizing Fellowship, People’s Town Halls, the Rural Media Center, and direct community action campaigns.
